Leased Lines

What are they?

Leased lines are a method of connectivity used to connect businesses to the internet or to remote sites.

They differ from broad band in several ways the two most important of which are;

  1. They connect synchronously.  This means the download speed is the same as the upload speed.  This is an advantage for any business who used hosted applications or has the need to upload large quantities of data to the internet or remote site.

  2. They come with a service level agreement.  If your business depends internet or inter site connectivity for its survival this is an important factor.  Most broad band services do not carry a service level agreement and faults are fixed as best endevours. ADSL carries no guarantee of fix or reliability.

What will it do for me?

Because of the two factors listed above a leased line will give you a much more reliable internet or inter site connection allowing you to access hosted applications or share large quantities of data between sites.  Overall it can provide a reduction in the cost of hardware required to deploy systems over a wide geographical area.

In addition, if there is a fault on the line it will be treated according to a set service level agreement, this reduces the cost of systems down time, with guarantees from the provider matched by penalties for failing to meet these.  This is because a leased line is inherently more stable technology and providers give priority engineering time to these systems.

Because the line is synchronous and reliable it is possible to use Quality of Service to guarantee business critical services such as voice, video and particular types of data.

How do I get it?
