"Green" Computer systems

With rising concern about climate changes and the impact businesses - both large and small - are having on the environment, an area often overlooked by the environmentally conscious organisation is computing technology.

As the thirst for faster, more efficient computing resources increases, “green” computing policies are rarely top of the list of ways to decrease a business’s carbon footprint and are often overlooked all together. With this in mind ICT consultants, Piran Technologies have launched a wave of green computing initiatives to help businesses achieve “Greener Computing”.

How can we help you?

Below is a list of some of the points you might consider to make your computer systems greener.  Piran Technologies uses all of these initiatives and more as part of our environmental policy.

Please contact us on 08450 345 005 to discuss how you might implement these initiatives to save you money and support your environmental mangement policies.

Remote working practices

By delivering best of breed solutions for remote offices and remote workers we have allowed our customers to reduce emissions by reducing the amount of car journeys to and from the main work premises.

Eco friendly printing

We are encouraging the use of solid ink printers to eliminate toner waste and the use of toner cartridges.  We also ask our customers to consider duplex printing to use both sides of an A4 sheet and where possible to condense two pages to a sheet

Virtual machines & Terminal Services

Virtual machine technologies allow multiple servers or PC’s to be installed onto a single hardware platform thus reducing the amount of hardware needed to run business computing systems.  The base server platform is also constructed from hardware with lower than average power consumption to further decrease environmental impact.

Computer recycling

We make our customers aware of the legal requirements for the disposal of computing equipment and offer a recycling service.

Low power consumption equipment (Blade Servers/Processors/TFT’s/Laptops)

Where possible, we supply low power consumption hardware components in our servers to reduce the environmental impact.  To encourage customers to make the move to flat screen monitors, we offer them at cost price, typically this can return a 40% saving on monitor power consumption.

Using eco friendly hardware manufacturers

Every month we check with leading environmental advise organisations to ensure the equipment we supply and the manufacturers of that equipment are contributing to sustainable and eco friendly computing resources.

Environmental computer audits

From July 2007 we will be offering environmental computing audits that run alongside our normal audits to allow our customers to consider the impact of their computing systems and to save money through reducing running costs
