Businesses warned over IT server failure

Businesses that have recently replaced their computer servers have been placed on alert, after a Cornish network specialist spotted a sudden increase in disc problems with machines bought in 2009.
Over recent weeks, Redruth-based Piran Technologies has been called in to deal with no less than nine similar hardware problems, each resulting in the loss of crucial company data.
Managing director Mark Wright explains: “Out of nowhere, enquiries about disc-related problems on servers have gone through the roof.
“These are predominantly affecting machines commissioned in the first half of 2009, in ranges typically used by companies of around 15-25 computer users.
“We’re working with manufacturers to isolate the problem, which we believe may lie with the configuration of certain components. In the meantime, companies that installed a new server in 2009 would be well advised to take extra precautions with their data.”
Among other important housekeeping measures that could ameliorate the problem, Piran Tech is advising businesses to ensure their server’s latest firmware updates are installed promptly, by an experienced engineer.
Mark Wright adds: “Any companies who are in any doubt, or are concerned that their server could be affected are very welcome to call us, and confirm whether their hardware may be at risk.”
